Why the CUT is the most important of the 4 C’s:

Of the 4 C’s (Cut, Clarity, Colour, Carat) Cut is the most important factor. The true beauty of a diamond is hidden in the CUT.  The Cut is often overlooked and not explained to consumers as it’s the toughest part of a diamond for consumers to understand because it comes down to mathematics. The diamonds cut quality-  its proportions and how variations in these proportions can impact a diamond’s appearance and value.

A beautifully finished diamond is dazzling, with every facet displaying the craftsman’s skill and care. When a diamond interacts with light, every angle and every facet affects the amount of light returned to the eye. A diamonds appearance has a lot to do with its proportions and the relationships between them. An Excellent/Ideal Cut Diamond will exhibit incredible amounts of brilliance, scintillation and fire.

The cut grade is influenced by the diamond’s proportions. If one proportion factor is more extreme than the other, it can lower the cut grade of an otherwise well-cut diamond. An extremely large table facet, a very steep crown, a very deep pavilion, or a thick girdle can reduce a diamond’s cut grade significantly.

The top portion of a round brilliant diamond, its table and crown, affects how light enters and exits the stone. The diamond’s lower half, its pavilion, governs the initial path the light takes once it’s inside the stone. The diamond’s surface appearance and cut precisions, it’s finish, can make the difference between a diamond that looks lifeless and one that dances with light and colour.
